CBAM

CBAM
CARBON BORDER ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM

CBAM Is Now Part of Market Access

The European Union's definitive CBAM regime applies from 1 January 2026. For covered goods, embedded emissions influence the information, authorisation and certificate obligations faced by EU importers. Indian exporters should be ready to provide credible installation and product data and to explain how emissions are being reduced.

COVERED SECTORS

Which Sectors Are Covered

Cement
Iron and steel
Aluminium
Fertilisers
Electricity
Hydrogen
Coverage depends on the product's Combined Nomenclature code and the applicable rules, not only on a broad industry label.
THE 50 TONNE THRESHOLD

How Potential CBAM Exposure Is Built

EU importers bringing more than the single mass-based threshold of 50 tonnes of covered CBAM goods into the European Union may need authorised CBAM declarant status. The detailed treatment and exceptions must be checked, particularly for electricity and hydrogen and for the specific goods involved.

The actual calculation belongs to the EU importer's compliance process. Exporters affect the outcome by supplying accurate emissions information and reducing the carbon intensity of production.

Voluntary carbon credits do not generally reduce CBAM liability.
REFERENCE PRICE

CBAM Certificate Reference Price

CBAM certificate prices are linked to European Union Emissions Trading System auction prices. The European Commission publishes quarterly reference prices during 2026, with weekly publication expected from 2027. Current figures should be checked against the latest official publication.

EXPORTER ROADMAP

What an Indian Exporter Should Do

  1. 1

Map EU trade flows and product codes.

  2. 2

Confirm whether the importer and goods fall within the mechanism.

  3. 3

Identify the installation, production route and relevant reporting boundary.

  4. 4

Collect fuel, electricity, process and precursor data.

  5. 5

Calculate and quality-check embedded emissions under the applicable method.

  6. 6

Create a repeatable data pack for customers and verification.

  7. 7

Model exposure and prioritise reduction opportunities.

  8. 8

Connect energy efficiency, renewable power and process changes to product carbon intensity.

HOW WE SUPPORT

How Hindsecure Can Support

initial product and trade-flow screening
exposure scenarios using current reference prices
data-gap and governance assessment
customer-ready information packs
plant, process, electricity and precursor mapping
renewable power and decarbonisation option assessment
embedded-emissions calculation support
coordination with legal, tax and accredited verification specialists where needed
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Why Carbon Intensity Affects Competitiveness

If 10,000 tonnes of a covered product carry 2.0 tonnes of embedded carbon-dioxide equivalent per tonne, total embedded emissions are 20,000 tonnes. At an illustrative carbon price of €75 per tonne, the gross arithmetic exposure is €1.50 million before thresholds, benchmarks, free-allocation treatment, recognised carbon price, timing and other applicable adjustments.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

EU CBAM and embedded emissions

No. The destination, importer, product code, quantity and applicable exceptions must be assessed.

The obligation sits with the authorised EU declarant under the applicable rules. Exporters still need to supply reliable emissions information.

It may influence reported emissions where the applicable CBAM calculation rules and evidence permit. The power contract, grid treatment and documentation must be assessed rather than assumed.

Voluntary offsets are not a general deduction. The European Commission provides for deduction of an eligible carbon price paid in the country of production when the requirements and evidence are met.
